Is Single Origin Better Than a Blend?

Single Origin vs. Blend: Is One Better?

Not necessarily. Single origin matcha and blended matcha simply offer different experiences.

Single origin matcha comes from one specific region, farm, or cultivar, allowing its individual character to shine. Depending on the cultivar and terroir, it may be more floral, grassy, nutty, sweet, or umami-forward. Like single-origin coffee or wine, it’s often appreciated for its distinct personality.

Blended matcha combines teas from different cultivars, farms, or harvests. Skilled tea producers blend intentionally to create balance, consistency, and a particular flavor profile. A great blend can be exceptionally smooth and complex.

So, is single origin better? No. “Single origin” doesn’t automatically mean higher quality. What matters more is the quality of the tencha, how it was grown and processed, freshness, and ultimately how it tastes.

For us, the better matcha is simply the one that makes you want to slow down and enjoy the ritual.
